The Upper Room Angels was founded in August 1989 as a financial support group for the Upper Room Hospitality Ministry’s Food Bank and Soup Kitchen. The purpose was to provide a source of weekly income, supplement the random donations of food, money and services which the Ministry was wholly dependent.
Reading and discussing articles in the newspapers which appealed for food to replenish the bare cupboards (at the Upper Room) wasn’t enough for me. I felt I needed to do something and I contemplated both food and money? I came to the conclusion that money would better provide their needs.
I thought about what can I give and came up with the idea of $52, one dollar for each week of the year. I figured my personal donation of $52 would be of little help but if more people similarly would donate $52, that would help to raise a good amount of money and help the Ministry purchase food and supplies needed to assist their clients.
The angels is non-denominational. Since its inception August 1989 the angels have raised $2,675,214 at a minimum cost. To become an angel, Membership is $52.
