About

We are a non-profit organization located in Charlottetown, PEI. We operate a Food Bank and Soup Kitchen as a way to meet some of the food needs of our local families and individuals.

OUR STORY

The Upper Room Hospitality Ministry was established in 1984 when the Soup Kitchen first opened its doors. The Soup Kitchen provided hot meals for those in need in the Ch'town area. Two years later the Food Bank was opened to provide even more assistance with monthly food hampers. Over the past 30+ years, the demands of the Upper Room have increased as more families and individuals experience financial hardship and food insecurity. Both facilities are now run by paid staff and volunteers. The organization relies exclusively on donations of both food and funds. Many local farmers, businesses, churches, groups and individuals supply the Upper Room with non perishable food items, fresh meat, veggies and fruit, as well as financial donations. This non profit charity is run by a Board of Directors comprised of members of the local community. The board works with staff and volunteers to raise funds, organize food drives, and raise awareness about the work and requirements of the charity as it strives to help those less fortunate. The Upper Room is a member of the Canadian Association of Food Banks, and organizes the distribution of food to other food banks and soup kitchens in the province through the PEI Food Banks.

OUR MISSION

We believe all people should be able to access healthy food. We believe in creating a non-judgemental and inviting atmosphere in which those who are in need can enjoy a warm meal or take home grocery hampers to help round out their food needs.

Become a Volunteer

Volunteers are the heart of our organization. We depend on them daily to keep both the Food Bank and Soup Kitchen running smoothly. There are many opportunities for people to volunteer with us – serving meals at the Soup Kitchen, packing food hampers at the Food Bank, organizing and stocking shelves at the Food Bank, helping with Food Drives, assisting over the Christmas Holidays and being a member on our Board of Directors. We are extremely thankful for each person who volunteers with us.
